02  Slakkenhuis

Dit is een doorsnede van een spiraalsgewijs gewonden huisje, hoogstwaarschijnlijk van een slak. Dit exemplaar doet echter ook sterk denken aan de spiraalvorm die we kennen van ammonieten, een uitgestorven groep inktvissen. Soms is het lastig om van zo’n doorsnede te vertellen of het fossiel een slak is of een ammoniet. Bij ammonieten is de schelp aan de binnenkant onderverdeeld in vakjes. Die zijn hier niet zichtbaar, waardoor de conclusie is dat het een slakkenhuis betreft.

2. Cochlea
This is a cross-section of a shell that most likely once belonged to a snail. This specimen is also strongly reminiscent of the spiral shape that we’re familiar with from ammonites, a group of squids that is now extinct. It can be difficult to tell from such a cross-section whether a fossil like this used to be a snail or an ammonite. With ammonites, the shell on the inside is divided into compartments. That’s not the case for this fossil, which led to the conclusion of this being a snail shell.
