27 Michelinia

Michelinia is een veel voorkomende soort van de uitgestorven Tabulata-koralen. Het wordt wel honingraatkoraal genoemd, omdat de koraaldiertjes zo dicht op elkaar leven, dat hun kalken ‘huisjes’ in de vorm van vijf- of zeshoekjes zijn gerangschikt. Die vorm biedt de meeste ruimte op het minste oppervlak. De bouw van bijenraten en wespennesten volgt hetzelfde principe. De naam van dit fossiel heeft niets te maken met autobanden of dure restaurants, maar is een eerbetoon aan de Franse paleontoloog Jean-Louis Hardouin Michelin de Choisy (1786-1867).

27. Michelinia
Michelinia is a common species of the extinct Tabulata corals. It’s also called ‘honeycomb coral’ because the coral animals live so close together that their limestone ‘houses’ are arranged in the shape of pentagons or hexagons. The construction of bee hives and wasp nests follows the same principle. The name of this fossil has nothing to do with car tires or fancy restaurants - it’s a tribute to the French paleontologist Jean-Louis Hardouin Michelin de Choisy (1786-1867).
