15 Armpotige, Brachiopode

Dit leuke hartje is de schelp van een brachiopode. Ooit waren brachiopoden een zeer talrijke en succesvolle groep dieren; tegenwoordig zijn ze bijna uitgestorven. Ze lijken oppervlakkig op recente schelpen zoals kokkels en venusschelpen, maar behoorden tot een totaal andere diergroep. Belangrijk verschil: in tegenstelling tot de inwendig geheel weke mossels en oesters hadden brachiopoden ook in hun schelp harde onderdelen van kalk. Het hangt er natuurlijk helemaal van af hoe de fossiele schelpjes worden doorgezaagd, maar soms ontstaat zo’n hartvorm.

15. Brachiopod
This cute little heart is the shell of a brachiopod (arm-legged). Once, brachiopods were a group of successful and varied species, today they’re almost extinct. They lightly resemble recent shellfish such as cockles and clams, but belonged to a completely different group of animals. The difference? In contrast to the internally completely soft mussels and oysters, brachiopods also had hard parts of lime in their shells. It all depends on how the fossilized shells are sawn through, but sometimes it created a heart shape like this.
