The Grote Sint Laurenskerk is the largest and most popular monument of Alkmaar. The church is open and free to visit all summer and on several weekends. Weekly, thousands visit the church amounting to over 70.000 visitors a year.
The medieval church is a basilica built in Brabantian gothic style and houses two extraordinary organs: the Van Covelens and the Van Hagerbeer/Schnitger organs, which are still played during various concerts throughout the year. Additionally, a beautiful painting of The Last Judgement by Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen adorns the vaulted ceiling of the church. A digital introductory booklet for visitors of the Great Saint Laurence Church can be viewed here.
The Grote Kerk will reopen to the public from Thursday 4th June. The church can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday from 12:00h to 17:00h. It is no longer necessary to book a free ticket for your visit to the church in advance. However, there is a restriction on the number of visitors that may be present in the church at the same time. Would you like to be assured of access at a specific time slot? Then it is still possible to reserve a free ticket in advance via the website. Book a ticket via this page.
The rules of the RIVM apply at all times when visiting the church.
